Eco & Values

Products That Are Good for Your Pet. And the World They Live In.

Eco & Values is Talis-us's curated collection for owners who care about what goes into their pet's body, what goes onto their skin, and what ends up in the environment.

This is not a greenwashing shelf. Every product in the Eco & Values collection has been selected because it meets a measurable standard — clean ingredient sourcing, minimal processing, plant-based formulation, organic certification, single-ingredient transparency, or reduced environmental footprint. Products are not included because their packaging is green or their marketing uses the word "natural." They are included because the contents justify the claim.

The Talis Curated Eco & Values standard covers four dimensions:

🧪 Clean Ingredients — no artificial preservatives, no synthetic dyes, no mystery protein meals, no fillers included for weight rather than nutrition. Every ingredient serves a purpose and is identified by name.

🌱 Minimal Processing — freeze-drying, air-drying, cold-pressing, and raw preparation methods preserve nutritional integrity without the heat processing that destroys enzymes, probiotics, and bioavailable nutrients. Where processing is required, it is used purposefully and disclosed.

🐾 Ethical Sourcing — cage-free, grass-fed, wild-caught, free-range, and responsibly farmed protein sources are preferred at every tier. We prioritize brands that can demonstrate their supply chain, not just label it.

♻️ Reduced Footprint — packaging reduction, recycled materials, plant-based formulations that reduce synthetic chemical load on pets and households, and brands with documented sustainability commitments.

Product categories in Eco & Values:

  • 🥩 Single-Ingredient & Raw Treats — freeze-dried, one-ingredient treats with nothing added

  • 🌾 Organic & Limited-Ingredient Food — certified organic and minimal-ingredient nutrition for dogs and cats

  • 🌿 Plant-Based Pest Control — non-toxic, plant-powered flea, tick, and pest management

  • 🐠 Natural Aquarium & Plant Care — plant-based and mineral aquarium nutrition with no synthetic hormone residue

  • 🦎 Clean Reptile Habitat Products — bio-active, naturalistic habitat materials free from chemical additives

  • ♻️ Sustainable Pet Accessories — toys and accessories made from recycled or responsibly sourced materials

Talis Curated Eco & Values: because caring about your pet and caring about the planet are not separate decisions.

❓ Eco & Values — FAQ

Q1: What qualifies a product for the Eco & Values collection?

Products must meet at least one of four Talis Curated Eco & Values standards: clean ingredients (no artificial preservatives, dyes, or unnamed fillers), minimal processing (freeze-dried, raw, cold-pressed, or air-dried), ethical sourcing (cage-free, grass-fed, wild-caught, or free-range verified), or reduced environmental footprint (plant-based formulation, recycled materials, or certified organic). Products are not included based on packaging or marketing language alone — the formulation or manufacturing process must substantiate the claim.

Q2: What does "single-ingredient" mean and why does it matter?

A single-ingredient product contains exactly one protein or food source with nothing added — no binders, no preservatives, no flavor enhancers, no processing aids. Single-ingredient treats are the most transparent form of pet nutrition available: the label and the product are the same thing. For dogs or cats with food sensitivities, single-ingredient treats make ingredient testing straightforward. For owners who want to know exactly what their pet is eating, single-ingredient is the cleanest possible answer.

Q3: Is "natural" on a pet product label regulated?

In the US, the term "natural" on pet food labels is loosely regulated by AAFCO but not strictly enforced — it generally means the product does not contain synthetic additives, but the standard is not uniform across manufacturers. "Organic" carries a significantly higher bar: USDA Certified Organic requires third-party verification of ingredient sourcing, processing conditions, and absence of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. In this collection, we distinguish between products that use "natural" in a general sense and those that carry USDA Organic certification. Both standards are noted on each product page.

Q4: Are Wondercide products genuinely safe for cats?

Yes, when used as directed. Wondercide's flea and tick products use plant-derived essential oils — primarily cedarwood, lemongrass, peppermint, and rosemary — rather than synthetic pyrethroids. However, some essential oils (particularly undiluted concentrations) can be problematic for cats. Wondercide's formulations are specifically developed and tested for safe use on cats at the concentrations sold. Always follow the label directions, avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes, and do not apply undiluted essential oils. If your cat has known sensitivities or a health condition, consult a veterinarian before use.

Q5: What is a bio-active reptile setup and why is it more sustainable?

A bio-active terrarium is a living enclosure — it uses a drainage layer (such as Exo Terra Bio Drain), naturalistic substrate, live plants, and a micro-fauna population (typically springtails and isopods) to break down waste naturally. Unlike conventional setups that require full substrate replacement every few months, a well-maintained bio-active enclosure can run for years without a full strip-down. It eliminates the need for chemical substrate treatments, reduces waste going to landfill, and creates a more enriching, naturalistic environment for the animal. It is both the most animal-welfare-forward and the most environmentally sustainable reptile husbandry approach.

Q6: How do I know if a brand's sourcing claims are genuine?

We apply three filters when evaluating sourcing claims: (1) Can the brand name the farm, fishery, or region of origin? (2) Is the claim third-party verified (organic certification, MSC certification for wild-caught fish, RSPCA Assured, or equivalent)? (3) Is the claim consistent across the product line or isolated to marketing materials? Brands in the Eco & Values collection — particularly Nummy Tum-Tum (USDA Organic), Icelandic+ (Icelandic fishery origin), and Kiwi Country (New Zealand regulated farming) — meet at least two of these three criteria. Where sourcing is partially verified, we note it on the product page.

Q7: Are recycled-material toys as durable as conventional toys?

Cycle Dog's Duraplush line is manufactured from recycled plastic bottles processed into a durable plush fiber. The tensile strength and seam construction are comparable to conventional plush toys at the same price point. For moderate chewers and enrichment play, the durability is appropriate. For power chewers or dogs that systematically destroy plush, the recommendation remains rubber or rope construction regardless of material source — eco-credentials do not override the need to match toy type to the individual dog's play style.

Q8: Does Talis-us plan to expand the Eco & Values collection?

Yes. The Eco & Values collection is a living curation — new products are added as they are vetted to the standard, and products are removed if a brand's sourcing or formulation changes materially. We are actively evaluating additional organic food lines, reef-safe aquarium products, compostable packaging treats, and responsibly sourced reptile substrate options for future inclusion. Customer nominations for brands that meet the standard are welcome through our contact page.
